Designed for an active family, this residence is centered on a common area that supports a wide range of activities, from cooking and dining, homework and music, to curling up with a book by the fire. At the same time, the space makes a visually seamless connection to a natural outdoor garden area. Set among great trees, the often filtered light enters the house and plays off the interior spaces in myriad ways, depending on the time of day and year. The integrity of the home’s materials was also an important factor in the design—solid woods, concrete, and copper were selected because they stand up to family use yet look even better with age. Niches and wall surfaces are carefully placed for the display art and objects, so that these elements are integrated into the architectural fabric. A sophisticated home theater and complete automation system are also included.
