Project Details
This house, named for the stone outcropping on which it is built, is conceived as a “bunker” nestled into the rocks. Steel and concrete create a neutral background for interior furnishings and views into the landscape.
Portions of the outcropping were excavated in order to set the house into the site. Much of the stonework and excavation marks will be left exposed. Interior pieces – including a powder room, hearth, and sinks – will be carved out of existing stone. Excavated rock will be crushed and re-used as aggregate in concrete flooring.
Turner Exhibits designed a large pivoting steel and glass door that opens to the terrace. Sustainable features include a green roof and interior partitions clad with reclaimed wood siding.
Interiors will be by Olson Kundig Architects.
