Project Details
We are currently working with the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture (also known as the Washington State Natural History Museum) on a state-funded Predesign Report that will help the museum explore expansion options. The finished report will be used to secure state funding and as a fundraising tool with donors.
The Burke Museum is the oldest and one of the largest museums in the state with a collection of over 12 million artifacts and specimens, including totem poles, gemstones, and dinosaur fossils. Their Northwest Coast Native Art collection is the fifth largest in the United States, with approximately 10,000 items, many held in trust. Our goal is to not only present a predesign report, but to propose new ideas for how the museum might use exhibition spaces to increase visibility of the institution’s research and collections.
Tom Kundig is the lead designer on the project. Stephen Yamada Heidner is Principal in Charge and Rick Sundberg is on Museum Planning and Design.
