Project Details

Members of our firm were inspired by the concept of the passive house – a super energy efficient standard of building that aims to slash heating energy consumption of buildings by 90%. Working with a client with property outside of Calgary, we have designed a small-scale residential development of small homes designed to passive house standards.

Precisely positioning the buildings on the site was a major focus during conceptual design. Each building is oriented to maximize passive solar strategies. A desire for efficiency, durability, and minimal site impact strongly influence the structural design of the building. Concrete panels and primary structural frames are pre-fabricated off-site, shipped, and assembled on-site, reducing waste and damage to the landscape.

Associates Les Eerkes and Steven Rainville are designing the project with mentoring from Tom Kundig. Learn more about Passive Houses at http://www.passivehouse.us
