Installed at [storefront] Olson Kundig Architects, Hardware [Store] was a continuation of the firm’s exploratory “store” installations and social practice experiments. This homage to hardware and hardware stores invited visitors to look closely at the hinges, doorbells, D.I.Y. inventions and tools that comprise the smaller-scaled elements of architecture. It included tributes to two families who play significant roles in the realm of hardware in Seattle, an installation highlighting engineering impresario Phil Turner’s career in hardware, a “How to Design a Hardware Line” exhibit featuring Tom Kundig’s recent experience developing a line of hardware and a collection of seminal, strange and extraordinary pieces of hardware donated by community members.
Hardware [Store] was designed and curated by Alan Maskin and Garin Schenk of Olson Kundig Architects, with Seattle builders Mike Monda and Richard Manderbok of Krekow Jennings.
