Project Details
The turn of the 20th-century Bekins Storage Building is one of Seattle’s first reinforced concrete structures—rough-hewn and monolithic. With this project, this unreceptive storage building is transformed into an educational complex and a gateway between a university campus and a vibrant neighborhood. The original building will accommodate student lofts and street-level retail, while state-of-the-art academic and event space is grafted above the existing mass. The re-use of infrastructure is only part of the project’s demonstrative environmental agenda, which also includes passive conditioning strategies, green-roof water retention, and on-site power generation.
