Olson Kundig Architects launches [storefront]

Olson Kundig Architects is pleased to announce the launch of [storefront] Olson Kundig Architects: an experimental workspace focusing on the firm’s collaborations, research, community projects, prototypes, exhibits, and installations.

Kirsten R. Murray, AIA, Principal/Owner at Olson Kundig Architects, said “We were interested to see what could happen if we took a vacated storefront and used it as a space for design investigation through collaborations with artists, student groups, members of our community and others.”

Located in historic Pioneer Square at 406 Occidental Avenue, the [storefront] will provide space for a variety of activities throughout the coming months, including:

  • Artist in Residence, Mary Ann Peters
Mary Ann Peters is using the [storefront] as a working studio as she creates a mural for the exhibit “Jim Olson: Architecture for Art.” Organized by the Museum of Art at Washington State University, the exhibit will be the first comprehensive exhibition devoted to the career of Jim Olson. The exhibit runs from September 30 through December 10 at Washington State University, and will subsequently travel to additional locations. For more information about Peters’ work, visit
  • Washington State University School of Architecture, Summer Student Lab
Olson Kundig Architects is hosting a summer studio for undergraduate architecture students from Washington State University. Professor Ayad Rahmani is teaching the class with assistance from Olson Kundig Architects’ Principal Kirsten R. Murray, AIA and Associate Edward Lalonde.

Members of Olson Kundig Architects’ staff will lecture to the students on topics related to professional practice, ranging from sustainability to firm management, as well as providing mentorship and studio critiques. Students will also take part in aspects of the firm’s international internship program, as well as office events like Thursday evening crits.

  • Seattle Design Festival Events
The space will host a pop-up exhibit and events related to the Seattle Design Festival taking place in September. More details will be forthcoming.
  • Photo-Documentary
Olson Kundig Architects’ regular collaborator Joe Iano is photo-documenting the [storefront] throughout the summer. The project is an outgrowth of a more comprehensive photo-documentation of Pioneer Square.

The firm is exploring other uses for the [storefront], including workspace for a public art installation and a stage for the firm’s entry to Park(ing) Day Seattle 2011. More details will be released as the summer progresses.
